05-16-2005 - ' THE 40TH REUNION SPEECH '
THE BEST OF TIMES
Dick Forester/Fred Richardson
Palestine High School graduated 140 students in May of 1965. 62 members of our graduating class are in this room tonight.
No doubt, when some of you received the notice of our 40th Class Reunion, you, like me, asked yourself, “Do I really want to go?” But here we are and I think I know why……………………… I believe that when we reflect on the years of our youth, we realize that it truly was “the best of times”.
Your reunion committee, comprised of Bill Hall, Jan Frazier Charron, Jane Nettle Lunceford, Karen Owen, Jane Hardin Cagle, George McIntyre and Fred Richardson wanted to bring “the best of times” back to you this evening. They’ve held numerous meetings over the past six months to develop the program that you will share tonight. Their purpose was to provide you with an opportunity to visit, share, and remember the great times of 40 years ago, when we were blissfully ignorant of the real world. So, here’s a recap to help you remember what we believe were “the best of times”.
We were a generation born in the last days of World War II; the “Baby Boomers”. Our childhood was insulated from threats of terrorism, the devastation of the AIDS virus or a polluted environment.
The times in which we lived were vastly different from today.
We enjoyed a family life, which for the most part, was free of complications.
In the 50”s and 60”s, the majority of our parents…….people who focused on making a good living and upholding middle class values of hard work and conventional morality, were still married to each other. We respected our conservative parents who believed in “hands-on” discipline and never wasting ANYTHING. If you, like me, have recently been tasked with cleaning out their home, you are even more convinced than ever that they saved EVERYTHING.
Nevertheless, they chose to guide us, educate us, provide to us every opportunity and they considered it their responsibility, not that of the school or the daycare. They were people who were always available to us and involved in our lives. Because of their commitment, we not only had the privilege of developing close friendships with our peers, as is evidenced here tonight, but we also knew our friend’s parents and siblings. No doubt, we all can remember Mildred Bradley, Bill’s mother, and Duffy, Bill’s brother, who was always seated on the front bleachers at every Pep Rally held at Palestine High School. Or, my mother, Flossie Forester, who always participated as “Room Mother” or PTA Member.
These were people who wanted to be involved in our lives.
Sometimes, we considered our parents too involved, like when they were opposed to our choice of music, which had recently changed from Doris Day to Little Richard, but still, they managed to rear us without the aids of Prozac, Lexapro, or Ritalin.
Our diets were vastly different also.
Breakfast and dinner were family events with food that was actually cooked in the kitchen by your mother and eaten when your dad got home from work. Everyone enjoyed being “called to supper” and we weren’t afraid of what we ate.
We all ate fried foods, drank whole milk and always ate dessert. In fact, we fried everything and we wouldn’t have considered eating a veggie wrap or anything else that was wrapped in a low-carb tortilla. Our sandwiches were made with white bread not whole grains and we didn’t count calories or carbohydrates. Guilt-free eating……yes, the best of times!
And our communication was vastly different than it is today. We actually talked to each other - in person or over the telephone, sometimes having to wait until the shared party-line was not being used by a neighbor. We had never heard the term “email” or “personal digital assistant”, the PDA, as we all refer to it.
The television we watched was broadcast in black and white, and we survived without twenty-four/seven broadcasting, remote controls, instant replays and TIVO.
Our entertainment was also vastly different.
We didn’t bring movies home through Blockbuster or NetFlix; we went TO the movies. We sat in the Texas Theatre or in our cars at the Dogwood Drive-In Theatre, in the dark, holding hands with our dates. We ate buttered, not air-popped popcorn and drank real coke, not diet, without any concern for carbohydrates or fat grams.
Unlike most graduating classes of today, we graduated with friends with whom we shared memories of Elementary School Playgrounds, Junior High field trips and High School Pep Rallies, Football Games or other School Activities.
Many of the Lamar Elementary School graduates will never forget Jim Pendland and his starring role in “Cowboy On The Moon” in the fifth grade. That solo was unforgettable!
And what Reagan Junior High graduate could forget Tommy Crum and Scooter Bedre riding their horses to school in the spring of 1961. I believe both students and horses were sent home before the first bell rang.
Or how many times Mr. Dotson, our 8th grade math teacher, asked Jan Frazier and Bob Stephenson to please stare at the blackboard instead of at each other.
And what 1965 PHS student attending a High School football game wouldn’t agree that Karen Owen had the best legs of any Drum Majorette in the State?
We also had great teachers who were dedicated to, not only teaching their curriculum, but also teaching us self-discipline, respect and responsibility. Their interest in us is still evidenced tonight. Several have taken the time to be present here with us tonight.
I’d like to take a moment to recognize our teachers. Could you please stand as I call your names. (Read their names)
One of our former teachers, who was not able to attend tonight, sent this note.
“Dear Former Students,
What an honor and privilege to be invited to your 40th reunion. Has it really been forty years? I am sorry I will not be able to attend. It would be such a “shot in the arm” to see all of you. How you have “grown up” and taken your places of responsibility in this world. I am indeed proud of each of you! May God bless you and use you to make our world a better place.
Love to each of you,
Margaret Fitzgerald
“That Ole’ English Teacher”
Yes, we share decades of memories with the people seated in this room and those who responded to the invitation to our reunion.
Some of my favorite memories of “the best of times” revolve around our cars…….
Who remembers David Farrow’s Black ’57 Ford Crown Victoria and Jerry Bell’s 55' black chevrolet.
None of our cars were new cars, well, except for Jane Ann’s 1965 Maroon Mustang. And get this novelty……….. we washed our cars! … Old or new, before we went on a date. Most of us actually had part time jobs where we earned the money to buy the 31 cent a gallon gasoline that kept them running. I know Fred and I were disc jockeys at KNET, spinning records, before we were old enough to vote. I think I’ll turn the microphone over to Fred and let him see how many of you remember the “top twenty” records he and I sent our over the radio waves in 1965.
Fred Richardson
Thanks, Dick. 1965, Wow, it just doesn’t seem like it could have been 40 years ago.
See how many you remember these hits …….. Number one was
'Wooly Bully' - Sam The Sham and the Pharaohs
2. 'I Can't Help Myself' - The Four Tops
3. '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction' - The Rolling Stones
4. 'You Were On My Mind' - We Five
5. 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'' - The Righteous Brothers
6. 'Downtown' - Petula Clark
7. 'Help' - The Beatles
8. 'Can't You Hear My Heartbeat' - Herman's Hermits
9. 'Crying In The Chapel' - Elvis Presley
10. 'My Girl' - The Temptations
11. 'Help Me Rhonda' - The Beach Boys
12. 'King Of The Road' - Roger Miller
13. 'The Birds And The Bees' - Jewel Akens
14. 'Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me' - Mel Carter
15. 'Shotgun' - Jr. Walker And The All Stars
16. 'I Got You Babe -Sonny and Cher
17. 'This Diamond Ring' - Gary Lewis and the Playboys
18. 'The In Crowd' - The Ramsey Lewis Trio
19. 'Mrs. Brown, You've Got A Lovely Daughter' - Herman's Hermits
20. 'Stop In The Name Of Love -The Supremes
Wow, does that list ever bring back memories.
Well, Dick was talking about our cars I think before he regressed to remembering KNET.
If we didn’t have a car, and most of us didn’t, we would double date with some friend who had a car. We even went “parking” together on Manley Mountain. Our cars sat lined side by side while we steamed up the windows with the “current love of our life”.
Or we would drive our cars to the Dogwood Drive-In Theatre where we either froze to death in the winter or melted in the summer heat. But we didn’t care about the elements; we didn’t want to be anywhere else. We spent our weekends in those cars, cruising Heck’s Drive-In where we could get Frito-Pie and Frosty Mugs of Root Beer , or Buddies Drive in where we dined on hamburgers, French fries and cherry-lime squeezes. We would cruise Palestine Avenue just to eat a Ralphburger at Ralph’s Drive In. I can close my eyes to this day and still recall how good a Ralphburger was. Everything we did, everything we bought, we paid for with cash. No one had a single credit card in their wallet. Just imagine……..life with no credit.
In Junior High, our Summers consisted of Summer Camps and Summer League Teams and the YMCA……..where we met on Friday nights to dance to Floyd Cramer’s number one hit “Last Date”. And, the “Y”, as we called it, was where we bowled, and took swimming lessons from Harold Sumrall and diving lessons from Jerry Dike.
Yes, we went to Camp together, were in Clubs together and played on teams together. We competed together and against each other and we remained friends regardless of who won or lost.
The majority of us were in Church on Sundays, some of us being dragged in by Sandra Stephenson’s Dad who was the on Staff at the First Baptist Church, but still, we were there.
We felt free to attend our School classes without the fear of a deranged classmate opening fire on us in the hallways or classrooms. Although some of us may have believed that some of our classmates were indeed deranged. Like who , except George McIntyre and Kathy Missilidine, would have climbed to the top of the water tower on South Sycamore Street in the summer of 1962.
No, our lives weren’t threatened within the walls of PHS, except by our teachers!
We only lost our classmates, like Kay Williams or Murphy Manley to tragic car accidents or some illness.
Another vastly different part of our lives was our attire and our hairstyles.
Our clothes came from Sears, JC Penney, The Jay Shop, The Co-Ed, K Wolens or Roquemores Men’ Store.
We didn’t wear designer clothes or designer sunglasses; we wore our underwear under our clothes rather than on top, and belts held up our blue jeans, but even without belts, we wouldn’t have let our blue jeans hang below our behinds.
Everything we needed could be found at McCroyes, Sears, Penneys or the grocery store. We put Butch Wax or Aqua Net Hairspray on our hair and would never have considered turning our hair purple or blue. We would have never asked for permission from our parents to pierce our ears much less pierce every body part known to man without our parents knowing about it!
And tattoos? Sailors had tattoos, not our classmates. Now, I want to pause a minute here and address tattoos……..does anyone in attendance here tonight have a tattoo….preferably one that is visible when you are clothed?
(Award given to Robert Redden)
Our language was dramatically different 40 years ago too.
No one used the “F” word and “Damn” was a bad word to us. If you used profanity you were probably in the minority. And, we witnessed first hand, our classmate’s punishment when he wrote his infamous poem “Spider, Spider” for Mrs. Hart’s English Class, in which he “ implied “ the word “bastard” at the end of a sentence.
Does anyone remember that poem? Is the poet with us tonight? Robert?
Robert Redden? Could you please stand while we recall that infamous poem?
THE SPIDER BY ROBERT REDDEN
Spider, Spider on the Wall
Spider, Spider long and tall
Can’t you see that wall is plastered?
Get off that wall, you dirty………………….spider
Yes, it truly was the “best of times” and every time we turned around, there was Earl Thompson with that camera, recording every memorable moment. Thanks to Earl we have a lot of the photos displayed here tonight.
Speaking of cameras, does anyone remember Ojeta Briggs taking our senior pictures?
We looked pretty good even without Glamour Shots!
I remember Ojeta had a “reputation” of being rather free-spirited for 1965 and we could hardly wait to get to her studio to snoop around.
Yeah, the best of times…..
And, now here we are forty years later. White hair on our heads, at least those of us with hair….. who do not use Clairol or Grecian Formula.
Lines in our faces, extra inches around our middles, crowns on our teeth.
Some of us with artificial joints, glasses, and a lot of us traveled here with an overnight bag full of prescribed drugs that we take so we can keep us with our grandchildren!
Speaking of Grandchildren……….we’d like to know who of our classmates has more than 10 grandchildren? Please stand if you have more than 10 grandchildren.
(Award given to Jean Thornton)
Many of us have kept up with each other over the years and many have renewed or resumed friendships through this reunion, our web site, or that magical avenue of communication we all now use called e-mail. We have been scattered to the four corners and some of our classmates traveled long distances to be here tonight. We have an award for the classmate that traveled the greatest distance to be with us tonight. (I think it’s Deborah Pickle who lives in Anchorage, Alaska. But, you might ask if anyone traveled a greater distance than Anchorage to be with us) –
(award given to Deborah Pickle)
I have the very fondest memories of 1965 at PHS and Dick and I have enjoyed reminiscing with all of you.
I want to thank our Reunion Committee for their initiative in planning this event, and I, along with the Committee, thank you again for coming.
Please enjoy your dinner and Thank You for helping Dick Forrester, the “PHS Music Man” and me remember “the best of times'.

I have a brand new grandson, Jacob Ryan Grumbles, born Feb 22, 2005. Can you tell how proud I am !! My husband and I have 41 acres right here in Palestine, have four horses and raise our own hay. Enjoy going to auctions and looking for 'buys'. Love to country-western dance, but can't drag hubby out often enough to suit me.
My memories of PHS are all good....what can you say except we 'were' and still 'are' a terrific bunch!
Looking forward to seeing everyone.

After high school (I graduated in August), I attended Henderson Co. Jr. College and then transferred to Sam Houston State University where 'hubby' and I graduated in 1969. We later completed our graduate degrees.
We were offered teaching positions in Lake Jackson, Texas (south of Houston), and lived there for most of 29 years. When retirement was an option we both decided to take it and move back to East Texas. At first we moved into my family home north of Palestine and then bought a new home in Tyler. We kept the farm and divide our time between the two places.
I am still married to Donnie (Don) Hemby, my high school sweetheart and will be celebrating our 42nd anniversary in a few months. We have two children. Our son Michael works for the Travis County Sheriff's Department in finance and homeland security. His wife is an auditor for foster homes in the Austin area and they have given us 3 wonderful grandchildren. Our daughter Trisha is a physical therapist in Austin and just celebrated her first wedding anniversary. Her husband is a chemical engineer for Emerson Electronics.
As to interests and hobbies - I love to read, shop, decorate, dance and go to museums etc. I also enjoy Yoga, Tai Chi and artsy things. I sometimes take a class or so just for fun.
Donnie and I like to travel and try to go somewhere exciting 2 or 3 weeks a year. We discovered winter sports years ago and try to spend a week in the mountains - just aging ski bums. Luckily we have a time share which gives us a lot of travel options.
My memories of high school are good ones. I really, really did like school! My favorite subject was English (especially Mrs. Dear's class) and history. Can you guess what I taught all those years? I enjoyed the pep rallies, the dances, the open campus and most of all the friends made along the way.

Married to my gorgeous wife Susan, that is an interior designer and owns the 'Sassy Spur', a shabby chic to urban cowboy store in Bulverde, TX. We have two wonderful young adults at home. Mathew (18) is a senior at Smithson Valley High School and is going to Tarleton State to be a student/ athlete. He aspires to be a sports agent. Clarisse (15) is a National Honor freshman student at Smithson Valley High School that is into acting and baby sits for hire. We also have two dogs (Bosley, a chocolate lab) and (Joe the Beagle). They love to play on and in the Guadalupe river just out from our front porch in Spring Branch, Tx. As for me, I've been a college and professional football coach now for 25 years. I can honestly say that I've never worked a day in my life but I only wish that I could have been paid by the hour. It has allowed us to live and coach all over the world in every league known to man. I am currently the Defensive Coordinator at Baylor University. My family consists of husband - Paul, daughter-Michele (26 years old), son-Travis (16 years old, 3 dogs. I am a Legal and Land Assistant at Peoples Energy Production in downtown Houston. Paul is Manager at Universal Computer systems for almost 20 years. He in involved with the Cyfair Rodeo Association, volunteering each Friday night in June and July, as well as a volunteer at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Association, which is in Houston around March of each year. He plays in racquetball and handball tournaments, works out faithfully during the week and is involved in the Sportsman Ministry at our Church. He and Travis like bird hunting during the season, which gives me some 'home alone' quality time to myself...actually, I spend a good deal of that quality ti8me shopping. Michele lives in Houston and has been a dental assistant since graduating from high school and also spends quality time with me - shopping! Travis is in the 11th grade, a good student, actively involved on the Debate team and has been in baseball since age 4. As for me, I do aerobics and body sculpting classes several times a week, and of course, that quality time shopping! Our family as a team has started spending one day over a weekend a month doing something as a family - bowling pool, movie, etc. We also like to snow ski. As far as memories of PHS - I loved it and wish I could do it all over again - homework and all! I had the best friends, best memories and best times and my days as a Wildcat Pep-ette were unforgettable. The bus rides to and from the games were so much fun as well as decorating the gym for pep rallies, and trying to get Mrs. Hubbard to approve my sewing projects in Homemaking were challenging. Thank goodness typing and shorthand were my best subjects since sewing wasn't my forte! I have lifelong friends from PHS and keep in touch with a lot of them on a daily basis. I could hardly wait to 'get outta Palestine' and head to the big city but always look forward to coming back to my hometown and visit friends, relax and reminisce. 'Go Wildcats!'

After receiving my Doctorate in Multinational Management from Harvard, I further pursued my education as a Billingsley Scholar at Oxford. Following 20 years of directing Fortune 100 companies, learning to fluently speak Mandarin, impressing Wall Street with my business acumen while making millions of dollars, I decided to pursue a career in tap dancing. I recently performed at the Lincoln Center in Washington, D.C. and Her Majesty's Theatre in London.
Seriously, I am married to a wonderful guy, have a great son and daughter-in-law who recently gave me a beautiful granddaughter. We live in Colleyville, Texas and I work for Travelocity.

I enjoyed PHS years very much. Knowing what I know now would be interesting at the least to be back in High School. I would; however, go back in a heartbeat.
There were numerous good and bad experiences that I reminisce about at different times, but the one burr that sticks with me was in Dorothy's class. I don't remember the assignment specifically, but it was an essay or report of some sort. Scooter Bedre asked to see mine and I gave them my working paper (yellow legal) with margin entries, scratch outs, etc. Scooter wrote his name on the paper and submitted it. We passed them forward and they both wound up one behind the other. She scanned and read excerpts in class. We both got 'zero'!!! Never did forgive that woman for that!

Married to Barkley for 35 1/2years. Have one son, Brandon, who blessed us with 3 granddaughters. Stepson Paul, who blessed us with 1 grandson and 3 granddaughters (1 set of twins). Barkley is retired. I am a 19 year associate of Walmart D.C. We are active in Church and heavily involved in grandchildren and their gymnastics.
A favorite memory was attending a donkey basketball game with the football team trying to score a basket from the back of a donkey. And, of course, attending all the games as a pepette all the way to State!

David and I will celebrate 39 years of marriage June 25th. David is retired from Southwestern Bell and works part time for Darby Equipment as a salesman. I like to spend time with my grandchildren and be involved in their school and church activities. I like to garden, read, facilitate support groups and volunteer in the community to fight crime. I attend Alpine Church of Christ and have been a member there for 36 years. I also mentor young people who are hurting and need direction. I love what I do - being a wife, mother, grandmother and friend to those who need one! PHS was a one of a kind experience. I had my head turned all the time toward a certain guy - not y education. Not everybody back then got to drive a car to school, so I thought I was really 'out there' driving our HUGE blue 1961 Plymouth family car. It had bad shocks and I hit bottom several time in the alleys in downtown Palestine.
I have one child, Sharon Elizabeth (34) and two grandchildren, Chelsey Kate (16) and Jonathan David (5).

I've been married to my husband, Frank, for 31 years. We live in Athens and I teach school but plan to retire after next year. We have 4 sons and Frank also has two other sons. We have 6 grandchildren and a new baby girl due in July. I have been blessed with a great husband and wonderful family and even survived my 20 year old!! (I was pregnant with him at our 20 year reunion) I enjoy tennis, traveling and doing 'fun' girl things with my 9 year old twin granddaughters.
During my PHS years I remember: winning the State Championship, Cheerleading, the Choir, Mr. Moseley and his plays, the Arc Light staff, Heck’s and Buddies and dear friends. Looking back everything seems idyllic - maybe that's my 'rose-colored' glasses - but I did have a wonderful time!

I'm an old hippie living in the woods, trying hard to stay out of jail and the hospital. I have four dogs and two great kids. Robb, 35, is a videographer doing depositions and Caroline, 24, is a ballroom dance instructor and competitor based in Greensboro, North Carolina. Since PHS I've tried to have as many different jobs as possible, don't want to get in a rut, you know. I remember most that the girls were so damned pretty that they made my teeth hurt. Yeah, you know who you are.

We have a son that is a welder and one that is an engineer. The youngest is a U.S. Marine. My wife and I love to travel (when we can. Hobbies: cooking (and eating what I cook). I have a garden of 4 tomato plants, each in a five gallon can. I have a lot of stories and tales of High School, but most of them should be forgotten. I've been married to Glenda Vickery for 38 years and we have lived in Palestine and raised our family here. Our family includes Misty, married to Dennis Ellison, and parents of Caleb Chase, age 10, in June and Michael, who is getting married May 13th to Kimberly Elliott......that's why we may miss the first night with all of you, and Brandon, who is married to Toshia Hume, parents of Kirstan Leigh, age 9 months. Watching our grandson play soccer is a great treat for us. Anything having to do with family is what our main interests are. I am also interested in wood working in my shop.
My job as supervisor with Hunt Oil Co. in Yemen Arab Republic has enabled me to see many different parts of the world in my travels. I've seen many interesting things in the past 18 years....the ruins of Bathsheba's palace, Job's tomb, sand dunes in the setting sun, camels and people from all nations. I've endured sand storms, bombs and AK47's. I have two guards with me at all times for my protection. It's been interesting to say the least. But home is where my heart is with my wife and family.
